When I hear the term workshop, I immediately picture a large room with a projector screen and a room full of people listening to lectures from various individuals who specialize in the given topic. But when a hear “writing/reading workshop”, I imagine teachers congregating to discuss various ways to help our students become “literary masters”. I realized after reading Nancie Atwell’s In the Middle, that she was discussing how to create a workshop for in the classroom and how effective it can be for the students to have one-on-one instruction in writing.
